Rosemary (Salvia rosmarinus, formerly Rosmarinus officinalis) is a fragrant, evergreen woody shrub native to the Mediterranean region. Famous for its needle-like leaves and aromatic flavor, it is widely used in culinary dishes, traditional medicine, and cosmetics.
Key Characteristics
- Appearance: Features deep green, leathery, needle-like leaves with a silvery-white underside. Depending on the variety, it blooms with small, pollinator-friendly blue, purple, pink, or white flowers.
- Varieties: Ranges from upright, tall bushes (perfect for hedges) to trailing or creeping forms (ideal for hanging baskets and rock walls).
- Hardiness: Grows as a long-living perennial in warm climates but can be grown in containers in colder regions and brought indoors during the winter.
Growing Conditions
Rosemary is highly drought-tolerant and requires very little maintenance once established.
- Sunlight: Requires full, direct sunlight to thrive.
- Soil: Must have exceptionally well-drained, sandy, or loamy soil. Warning: It is highly susceptible to root rot if overwatered or planted in heavy, water-logged soils.
- Water & Fertilizer: Water young plants until established, then reduce to infrequent deep waterings. Minimal to no fertilization is required.
Uses
- Culinary: The fresh or dried leaves are an essential herb for flavoring meats, bread, roasted vegetables, and stews.
- Health & Wellness: Traditionally used for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, it is also a popular choice for aromatherapy and hair care.
